The Best Travel Trailers for Half-Ton Trucks (2027 Models)

Updated 2026-10-16 · ACamper RV Research

The best travel trailer for most half-ton trucks is the Grand Design Imagine XLS 22MLE. It has a 6,995 lb GVWR, a 664 lb dry tongue weight, a walk-around queen and a rear kitchen. It's been built since 2020, so used ones start around $17,700.

For couples who want the best build in a light trailer, pick the Rockwood Mini Lite 2205S (6,794 lb GVWR, composite walls, aluminum frame). For the lowest tongue weight, the Grand Design Transcend Xplor 22RBX is just 480 lbs dry.

A half-ton's tow rating is rarely the limit. Payload is. Keep the trailer's GVWR under about 7,500 lbs and check that your truck's door-jamb payload covers the loaded tongue weight plus everyone in the cab.

What "half-ton towable" really means

Shop by GVWR, not dry weight

Dry weight is the trailer with empty tanks and no options. You'll tow something close to the GVWR (the most it's allowed to weigh) once it's loaded. Every pick here has a GVWR of 8,000 lbs or less, and most are under 7,600.

Tongue weight against payload

A trailer puts 10–15% of its loaded weight on your hitch. A 7,000 lb trailer means roughly 850–1,000 lbs on the truck, plus a weight-distribution hitch around 100 lbs, plus people and gear. That's why the payload sticker on your door jamb decides more than the tow rating.

Length and height for wind

Long, tall trailers catch crosswinds. Under about 28 feet, a half-ton feels in control. Airstreams tow noticeably easier than their weight suggests because they're under 10 feet tall and rounded.

A weight-distribution hitch with sway control

Every trailer here should be towed with a weight-distributing hitch that has sway control. It moves some tongue weight back to the front axle so steering and braking stay normal.

For couples and small families

Under 27 feet and under 7,400 lbs GVWR. These are the trailers half-ton owners are happiest with on the highway.

Grand Design Imagine XLS 22MLE: Best overall

It has a rear kitchen with a big wraparound counter, theater seats in the slide, a booth dinette, and a front 60" × 80" queen you can walk around, with a privacy curtain. A 15,000 BTU A/C is standard. It has been built since 2020, so there's a deep used market, and Grand Design's owner forums and warranty support have a good reputation.

Watch for: Tanks are small (37 gallons fresh and black), so it's a hookup-camping trailer. The bedroom is closed off by a curtain, not a door.

Forest River Rockwood Mini Lite 2205S: Best-built light trailer

Rockwood Mini Lites use composite (wood-free) walls, a laminated walkable roof and an aluminum frame. That's why they weigh less than steel-frame trailers of the same size. The 2205S has a front queen, theater seats in the slide, a fireplace, a rear corner-shower bath, a 2" rear receiver and a big 53-gallon fresh tank for its size. The A/C is an 18,000 BTU ChillCube. The Flagstaff Micro Lite 22FBS is the same trailer sold under Forest River's sister brand, and our live count includes both.

Watch for: The grey and black tanks are only 29 gallons. Forest River changed a lot across the Mini Lite line for 2027, so compare a 2026 and a 2027 in person.

Grand Design Transcend Xplor 22RBX: Lowest tongue weight

A 480 lb dry tongue weight is unusually light for a 27-foot trailer, which leaves more truck payload for your passengers. The rear bath runs the full width, an 84" U-shaped lounge sits in the slide, and there's an exterior griddle with its own small fridge. It's prepped for 600 watts of solar and a 2,000-watt inverter, and the fresh tank holds 56 gallons.

Watch for: Cargo capacity is only 1,246 lbs, the lowest here. A light tongue can mean more sway sensitivity, so set up the hitch carefully and load heavy items forward of the axles.

Brinkley Model Ix 20x: Best premium small trailer

Brinkley (launched in 2022 by former Grand Design executives, including Grand Design co-founder Ron Fenech) brought its fifth-wheel build to a small couples' trailer: an 18,000 BTU variable-speed ChillCube A/C with a heat pump, a Murphy bed, theater seats, and residential-feel finishes. It's the best choice for buyers who want fifth-wheel quality without the truck.

Watch for: It's new, so there's no long-term owner record yet. It sleeps two. The price is close to a mid-size Imagine.

Airstream Flying Cloud 25FB: Easiest to tow

Aluminum shells last decades and hold value better than anything else here. The 25FB has a front queen or twin beds, a rear full bath, and a ducted A/C with a heat pump. Because Airstream has made the 25FB since 2010, a used one is the best way into the brand.

Watch for: The price, and the tongue weight (860 lbs dry) is the highest of the couples' picks. The tanks hold 39 gallons each.

More room, still half-ton

Around 27–30 feet and up to 8,000 lbs GVWR. These work with a half-ton that has a good payload rating, and they're where most families end up.

Jayco Jay Feather 25RB: Best rear-bath layout

Jayco's lightweight line is built on a Norco Z-frame and comes with Jayco's two-year warranty. The 25RB has a big rear bath, a front bedroom and a ducted 13,500 BTU A/C. The 55-gallon fresh and 61-gallon grey tanks are big for its weight.

Watch for: At 30 feet and 11 feet tall, it catches wind. Cargo capacity is 1,470 lbs.

Winnebago Thrive 22MLS: Best tanks for its size

Thrive is Winnebago's new towable line. The 22MLS carries 60 gallons of fresh water and 49 gallons each of grey and black. That's more than trailers several feet longer, and it lets you camp a few days without hookups. It has a 1,930 lb cargo capacity, ducted 15,000 BTU A/C, a fireplace and solar.

Watch for: The model is new for 2026, so there's little owner feedback yet. It's heavy for 27 feet.

Forest River Cherokee Grey Wolf 23MK: Best value

This is one of the most-listed couples' trailers in our inventory, so prices are competitive and there's always one nearby. It has a king bed, a fireplace and a 2,051 lb cargo capacity, which is the most of any pick here. It's the cheapest way into a 28-foot trailer.

Watch for: Fit and finish is a step below Grand Design and Jayco. Get a used one inspected for roof and slide seals.

Picks other lists get wrong

Palomino Pause 20.2

It shows up on half-ton lists, but its GVWR is 9,468 lbs. That's a 3/4-ton trailer. It's also gone from Palomino's 2027 Pause lineup, which is now the 17.4 AR, 19.4 AR and 19.6 AR.

Coachmen Adrenaline 21LT and CrossRoads Sunset Trail SS285CK

Both are on a popular "half-ton" list, but their GVWRs are 9,735 lbs and 9,530 lbs. Even if a half-ton is rated to tow that, the loaded tongue weight will exceed most half-ton payloads.

Weight terms on the sticker

UVW / dry weightThe trailer empty, with standard equipment only. Options add weight.
GVWRThe most the trailer may weigh loaded. Plan your truck around this.
CCC / cargo capacityGVWR minus UVW: what you can add, including water at 8.3 lbs per gallon.
Hitch / tongue weightWhat presses down on your hitch. Dry figures grow to 10–15% of the loaded trailer.
Truck payloadOn your door jamb's yellow sticker. It has to cover tongue weight, the hitch, people and gear.

A quick payload check

Take the trailer's GVWR and multiply by 0.13. Add 100 lbs for the hitch and the weight of everyone and everything in your truck. If the total is below your door-jamb payload number, you're in good shape.,Example: the Imagine XLS 22MLE at 6,995 lbs × 0.13 is about 910 lbs. Add 100 for the hitch and 450 for two adults and a cooler, and you need about 1,460 lbs of payload. Most half-tons clear that. A 7,800 lb trailer and a family of four would need about 1,700 lbs, which many don't.

FAQ

What is the best travel trailer for a half-ton truck?

The Grand Design Imagine XLS 22MLE for most people: 6,995 lb GVWR, 664 lb dry tongue weight and a walk-around queen. The Rockwood Mini Lite 2205S is the best-built light option, and the Transcend Xplor 22RBX has the lowest tongue weight.

How heavy a travel trailer can a half-ton pull?

Many half-tons are rated to tow 9,000–13,000 lbs, but payload usually limits you first. In practice, a trailer with a GVWR around 7,000–7,800 lbs is the comfortable maximum for most half-ton trucks with a family aboard.

Can a half-ton pull a 30-foot travel trailer?

Some, yes. The Jayco Jay Feather 25RB is 30 feet with a 7,600 lb GVWR. Length matters for wind, so a 30-footer will feel less stable in crosswinds than a 25-footer of the same weight. Use a weight-distributing hitch with sway control.

Is dry weight or GVWR more important for towing?

GVWR. Dry weight leaves out water, propane, batteries, options and everything you pack. Most loaded trailers end up within a few hundred pounds of their GVWR.

Do I need a weight-distribution hitch with a half-ton?

For almost any travel trailer over about 5,000 lbs, yes. It shifts weight back onto the truck's front axle and includes sway control. Many truck makers require one above a certain tongue weight to reach the full tow rating.

How we researched this

We started from every 2027 travel trailer in the ACamper catalog with a GVWR of 8,000 lbs or less and a meaningful number for sale, and added the models on the top-ranking half-ton lists.

We dropped bunkhouses (they have their own guide) and anything whose GVWR doesn't realistically fit a half-ton's payload.

Weights come from the newest manufacturer spec sheets. Layouts were confirmed from the 2027 drawings.

Prices and counts come from ACamper's crawl of dealer inventory through Oct 14, 2026.
