The Best Half-Ton Towable Fifth Wheels (2027 Models)

Updated 2026-10-16 · ACamper RV Research

The best half-ton fifth wheel for most people is the Grand Design Reflection 100 Series 22RK: a 1,180 lb dry pin weight, a 9,995 lb GVWR, and 2,735 lbs of cargo capacity in under 27 feet.

The only fifth wheel we found that nearly any half-ton can carry comfortably is the Escape 5.0. It's a 21-foot fiberglass trailer with a pin weight around 630–650 lbs, sold factory-direct.

Every other "half-ton" fifth wheel puts roughly 1,600–2,000 lbs on the hitch when loaded. Only half-tons with a high payload rating, often 2,000 lbs or more, can carry that plus the hitch and passengers.

Why "half-ton towable" fifth wheels are tricky

Payload, not tow rating, is the limit

A fifth wheel puts 15–25% of its weight on the truck bed, much more than a travel trailer's 10–15%. Your half-ton may be rated to tow 11,000 lbs and still be overloaded by an 8,000 lb fifth wheel, because the pin weight, the hitch and everyone in the cab all count against payload.

Dry pin weight under about 1,300 lbs

Dry pin weights grow 300–600 lbs once the trailer is loaded, especially with full front storage. Starting under 1,300 lbs leaves a realistic chance of staying within a well-equipped half-ton's payload.

A light fifth-wheel hitch

Fifth-wheel hitches weigh 100–250 lbs. Puck-mounted or lightweight hitches (some under 100 lbs) can save room in your payload. Short-bed trucks need a sliding hitch or a pin box designed for short beds.

Load the back, not the front

Front storage bays sit directly over your truck. Put heavy items toward the rear of the trailer and keep the fresh tank low or empty while traveling to keep pin weight down.

Escape 5.0: The only true half-ton fifth wheel

Escape molds its trailers in two fiberglass halves, so there are no seams for leaks. The 5.0 has a front bed, a dinette, a kitchen and a bathroom. With a GVWR of only 5,500 lbs, it's the one fifth wheel we'd tow with a half-ton without doing the payload math twice. RV Travel calls it one that "can genuinely be towed by most half-ton trucks."

Watch for: It's small inside (21 feet), the tanks are about 28–30 gallons each, and expect a wait for a new one.

Coachmen Chaparral Lite 218SE: Lowest GVWR, with bunks

The low GVWR caps how heavy it can ever get, which caps the pin weight too. It's also unusual inside: the raised front is a bunk room with 30" × 62" and 30" × 74" bunks, and the queen bedroom and bath (24" × 36" shower) are at the back. It has theater seats, a J-lounge sleeper and two slides.

Watch for: Cargo capacity is only 1,135 lbs, so it fills up fast. Tanks are small (40 gallons fresh, 33 grey and black).

Picks other lists get wrong

Grand Design Reflection 100 Series 32BH "half-ton towable"

At least one dealer markets it as half-ton towable. Its 2027 spec sheet shows a 1,480 lb dry pin weight and an 11,995 lb GVWR. That is a 3/4-ton trailer at minimum.

Jayco Eagle SLE 28RKS

Eagle SLE is often grouped with half-ton fifth wheels, but most 2027 listings show a 1,550 lb dry pin weight (one shows 1,695) on a 9,995 lb GVWR. Loaded, that exceeds nearly every half-ton payload.

Keystone Cougar Sport 2700BH

Called "may work with a half-ton" in some dealer guides. Its dry pin weight is 1,365–1,390 lbs, and loaded it lands around 1,700–1,900 lbs. Plan on a 3/4-ton.

The payload math

Half-ton fifth wheel or travel trailer?

If your half-ton's payload is under about 1,900 lbs, a travel trailer of the same length will almost always be within limits when a fifth wheel isn't. Travel trailers put less weight on the truck (10–15% versus 18–22%).,If you're set on a fifth wheel for its stability and layout, the cleanest answer is a 3/4-ton truck. A used 3/4-ton often costs less than the difference between a standard and a max-payload half-ton.

FAQ

What is the best half-ton towable fifth wheel?

The Grand Design Reflection 100 Series 22RK for most buyers: a 1,180 lb dry pin weight, 9,995 lb GVWR and 2,735 lbs of cargo capacity. The Escape 5.0 is the only one most half-tons can carry without careful loading.

Can a half-ton really pull a fifth wheel?

It can pull one; the question is whether it can carry the pin weight. Loaded fifth wheels put about 18–22% of their weight on the truck. Many half-tons have 1,400–1,900 lbs of payload, which isn't enough for most fifth wheels once a hitch and passengers are added.

What is the lightest fifth wheel?

The Escape 5.0, at about 3,900 lbs dry with a 5,500 lb GVWR. Among mainstream dealer brands, the Grand Design Reflection 100 22RK (7,260 lbs dry) and Coachmen Chaparral Lite 218SE (7,365 lbs dry, 8,500 lb GVWR) are the lightest.

Do I need a short-bed hitch for a half-ton fifth wheel?

If your truck has a bed shorter than about 8 feet, use a sliding hitch or a short-bed pin box so the trailer clears the cab in tight turns. Some trailers, like Grand Design's Reflection 100 and 150, are designed with extra front clearance for short beds.

How we researched this

We pulled every 2027 fifth wheel in our spec database with a GVWR of 10,500 lbs or less and sorted by dry pin weight.

We added the models named on half-ton fifth-wheel lists and dealer pages, and checked their 2027 pin weights.

Layouts were confirmed from the 2027 manufacturer drawings.

Prices and counts come from ACamper's crawl of dealer inventory through Oct 14, 2026.
