The Best RVs for National Parks (2027 Models)
Updated 2026-10-16 · ACamper RV Research
If you want to go everywhere in the big Western parks, including Glacier's Going-to-the-Sun Road (21 feet maximum), get a camper van or compact motorhome under 21 feet. Good options are the Winnebago Revel (19' 7"), Thor Rize 18Z (17' 10") and the new Winnebago Elora 19DC (20' 4") with a full queen bed.
If you're towing, a trailer under 20 feet fits nearly every park campground, including Acadia's Seawall (20 feet) and Grand Canyon's Desert View (20-foot trailers). The Forest River R-Pod RP-171 (19 feet) is the best value, and the Airstream Caravel 16RB is the premium pick.
Zion changed its rules in 2026. The Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway now has hard limits of 7' 10" wide and 11' 4" tall, mirrors included, with no escort option. Most RVs and trailers are wider than that, so plan to enter from the south.
The limits that actually matter in parks
Total length, including what you tow
Park limits count bumpers, ladders, bike racks and anything you tow. A 25-foot trailer behind a 20-foot truck is a 45-foot rig on Going-to-the-Sun Road and in Zion's combined-length rule.
Width with mirrors
Most RVs are about 8' to 8' 6" wide before mirrors. Glacier's limit is 8 feet including mirrors; Zion's highway limit is 7' 10" including mirrors. Measure your rig with the mirrors out.
Height for tunnels and overhangs
Zion's highway limit is 11' 4". Glacier notes that vehicles over 10 feet may have trouble with rock overhangs west of Logan Pass. Roof A/Cs, solar panels and satellite domes all count.
Campground site length
Most park campgrounds list a maximum length, often 25–40 feet, but only a few sites hit the maximum and they book first. Under 25 feet you'll have your pick of sites.
Under 21 feet: legal on Going-to-the-Sun Road
These motorhomes and vans meet Glacier's 21-foot length limit. Check your exact mirror-to-mirror width against the 8-foot limit before you go.
Winnebago Elora 19DC: Best short motorhome with a real queen
Elora is Winnebago's new compact motorhome for 2027. The rear lounge converts to a full 60" × 80" queen, which is rare under 21 feet. It has a 24" × 30" shower with a pivoting lavatory wall and a gear deck over the cab. It carries 30 gallons of fresh and 30 of grey, more than most vans.
Watch for: At 10' 3" tall, it's a hair over Glacier's 10-foot guidance for the rock overhangs west of Logan Pass. The black tank is 4.7 gallons (a cassette-style toilet). It's brand new, so there are few reviews yet.

Winnebago Revel 44E: Best for back roads in parks
AWD, a power-lift bed over a gear garage, 35 gallons of fresh water and hydronic heat make it the van for parks with dirt roads (Canyonlands, Death Valley, Capitol Reef) as well as paved ones. At 19' 7", it fits Going-to-the-Sun and every park campground.
Watch for: It's exactly 10 feet tall, right at Glacier's overhang guidance. The bed is 49" wide, and the toilet is a cassette.

Thor Motor Coach Rize 18Z: Smallest with a wet bath
At under 18 feet, this is the most parkable van with a wet bath. It has a 47" × 75" flip-up bed over a big storage area, swivel cab chairs and an 11,000 BTU A/C. It's narrow (6' 9" body), which matters on Zion's 7' 10" limit, but check the measurement with your mirrors out.
Watch for: The bed is 47" wide, best for one person or a close couple. The fresh tank is 16 gallons.

Watch for: There's no built-in bathroom, just storage for a portable toilet. Plan on campground restrooms.

Trailers under 20 feet
Trailers can't drive Going-to-the-Sun Road, since the 21-foot limit includes the tow vehicle. But a short trailer fits nearly every park campground, and you can explore in the truck.
Forest River R-Pod RP-171: Best value park trailer
At 19 feet, it fits Acadia's Seawall (20 feet), Grand Canyon's Desert View (20-foot trailers) and Yosemite's Upper Pines (24-foot trailers). It has a rear queen, a bathroom, 30-gallon tanks and a heated underbelly. See our small-camper guide for more.
Watch for: The bathroom is tight. With a 20-foot truck, your total length is about 39 feet, which is under Zion's 50-foot combination limit.

Airstream Caravel 16RB: Best premium park trailer
The smallest Airstream with a full bath. A front dinette makes a bed, there's a heat-pump A/C, and newer ones come with lithium power and solar. Its rounded shape and 9' 5" height make it easy to tow on mountain park roads.
Watch for: The body is 8 feet wide, so it's over Zion's 7' 10" highway limit. Cargo capacity is 850 lbs, and the fresh tank is 23 gallons.

A family Class C under 25 feet
Under 25 feet you'll fit nearly every park campground site, though not Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Jayco Redhawk SE 22CF: Best short family motorhome
It has a cab-over bunk for kids, a 42" × 70" dinette, a rear queen and a rear bath with a 24" × 36" shower, all under 25 feet. The tanks are big for its size (44 gallons fresh, 40 grey), and it's one of the least expensive new Class Cs.
Watch for: At 8' 4" wide and 11' 6" tall, it can't use Zion's east-side highway or Going-to-the-Sun Road. The rear queen is 60" × 70".

Picks other lists get wrong
Zion's tunnel "escort"
Older guides say oversized RVs can pay for a ranger escort through the Zion–Mt. Carmel Tunnel. NPS now enforces fixed limits on the whole highway from Canyon Junction to the East Entrance: 35' 9" long, 7' 10" wide, 11' 4" tall and 50,000 lbs, with combinations up to 50 feet and trailers no more than 26 feet from hitch to rear axle. Measurements include mirrors, A/Cs and racks.
"Any RV under 30 feet fits national parks"
Some campgrounds are much tighter: Acadia's Seawall lists 20 feet, and Grand Canyon's Desert View lists 20-foot trailers and 30-foot RVs. Glacier's Going-to-the-Sun Road allows only 21 feet, including the tow vehicle.

FAQ
What is the best RV for national parks?
A camper van or compact motorhome under 21 feet, like the Winnebago Revel, Thor Rize 18Z or Winnebago Elora 19DC, fits every park road and campground, including Glacier's Going-to-the-Sun Road. For towing, a trailer under 20 feet such as the Forest River R-Pod RP-171.
What size RV can drive Going-to-the-Sun Road?
Vehicles and combinations up to 21 feet long (including bumpers) and 8 feet wide (including mirrors) between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun. Vehicles over 10 feet tall may have trouble with rock overhangs west of Logan Pass.
Can RVs drive through the Zion tunnel?
Only small ones. NPS enforces limits on the Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway of 35' 9" long, 7' 10" wide and 11' 4" tall, including mirrors, A/Cs and racks. There's no escort option, so larger RVs enter from the south and drive around.
What length RV fits most national park campgrounds?
Under 25 feet fits nearly every site. 25–35 feet fits most campgrounds, though you'll have fewer sites to choose from. Over 35 feet rules out many park campgrounds.
How we researched this
We took road limits directly from nps.gov (Glacier's Going-to-the-Sun Road page and Zion's Large Vehicles page) and campground limits from RVing Know How's September 2026 table.
We then picked RVs under 21 feet (motorized) and 20 feet (towable) from the ACamper catalog and checked their length, height and width on the 2027 spec sheets and drawings.
Prices and counts come from ACamper's crawl of dealer inventory through Oct 14, 2026.
