The Best Small Campers You Can Tow With an SUV (2027 Models)
Updated 2026-10-16 · ACamper RV Research
For most SUVs rated to tow 5,000 lbs, the best small camper is the Forest River R-Pod RP-171. It has a 4,029 lb GVWR, a rear queen, a real bathroom, and 30-gallon fresh, grey and black tanks. R-Pods have been built since 2009, so used ones start under $10,000.
If your SUV is rated for only 3,500 lbs, the Jayco Jay Feather Air SL 15TBSL has a GVWR of exactly 3,500 lbs with twin beds that make a king. The Coachmen Catalina Summit 7 134RDX is the budget pick, from about $11,300 new.
The camper that tops most SUV lists, the Airstream Basecamp 16, is no longer made. Airstream's 2027 Basecamps are 20 feet with GVWRs of 4,300–4,500 lbs.
How to match a camper to an SUV
Keep GVWR well under the tow rating
Use the camper's GVWR, not its dry weight. A good rule is to stay at or below about 80% of your SUV's tow rating, so a 5,000 lb SUV pairs best with a camper around 4,000 lbs GVWR.
Tongue weight against the SUV's limit
Many SUVs cap tongue weight at 10% of the tow rating, so a 5,000 lb SUV allows about 500 lbs on the hitch. Every pick here has a dry hitch weight under 500 lbs. Passengers and cargo in the SUV come out of the same payload.
A bathroom, or not
Teardrops and micro campers often skip the bathroom to save weight. Everything in our main list has a toilet and shower. If you mainly stay in campgrounds with bathhouses, a teardrop saves 1,000+ lbs.
Cargo capacity that's real
Small campers can have very little room for your gear and water. Look at cargo capacity (GVWR minus dry weight). The Airstream Bambi 16RB, for example, has just 350 lbs.
For SUVs rated to tow 5,000 lbs
This covers most three-row midsize SUVs, plus many midsize pickups. Check your owner's manual for the exact rating and tongue limit.
Forest River R-Pod RP-171: Best overall
The 2027 version has a rear queen bed, a front dinette, a real bathroom, and an air fryer/microwave. It also has an enclosed, heated underbelly, a tankless water heater, and roof solar with a controller and inverter prep. A 15,000 BTU A/C is big for a 19-foot camper. With 1,500 lbs of cargo capacity and 30-gallon tanks, it's a real camper, not a tent on wheels.
Watch for: The bathroom is tight. R-Pod layouts have changed several times since 2009, so an older 171 may not match the 2027 floorplan. Check the drawing for the year you're buying.

What tows it: Most SUVs rated for 5,000 lbs. It's under 10 feet tall, so it catches less wind than a boxy camper.

Grand Design Transcend One 131DL: Biggest tanks for its size
At under 16 feet it has a 60" × 80" Murphy queen that folds up into a sofa, a rear bathroom, and 37-gallon fresh, grey and black tanks. That's the most water of any camper this size. It's prepped for 600 watts of solar and a 2,000-watt inverter and has a rear 1.25" receiver for a bike rack.
Watch for: The A/C is a small 8,000 BTU unit. The GVWR is the highest of this group, so load carefully if your SUV is rated for exactly 5,000 lbs.

Forest River Rockwood Geo Pro G17BLE: Best for a family of four
This is one of the lightest campers with real bunks. It has 32" × 74" double bunks in the back next to a full bathroom with a tub, a 58" × 80" full bed up front, and a 32" dinette. Geo Pro is Forest River's off-grid-minded small line, and its 345 lb hitch weight is easy on an SUV.
Watch for: The front bed is a full, not a queen. There's no slide, so with four people it's a sleep-and-go camper.

Lance 1475: Best-built small camper
Lance frames the walls, floor and roof in aluminum, insulates them with block foam, and uses Azdel composite instead of wood under the fiberglass skin, so there's nothing to rot. Owners rate them well for cold-weather camping, and they last. The 1475 has a front bed, a swivel-chair lounge with a table, and a rear bathroom. The interior is 6' 8" tall.
Watch for: It costs about twice as much as an R-Pod. Few are on dealer lots at any time, so expect to travel or buy used.

For SUVs rated to tow 3,500 lbs
This covers vehicles like the Subaru Outback, Tesla Model Y and Kia Carnival. You have very little margin, so stay near or under 3,500 lbs GVWR and pack light.
Jayco Jay Feather Air SL 15TBSL: Best for a 3,500 lb rating
Two 32" × 74" twin beds sit at the front and convert to a king with a table insert. There's a full bathroom with a separate shower and toilet across the back. It also has a 13,500 BTU roof A/C and 985 lbs of cargo capacity. It's the most livable camper we found that never exceeds a 3,500 lb tow rating, even fully loaded.
Watch for: If it's loaded right to its GVWR, you're at the limit of a 3,500 lb vehicle. Carry water only when you need it.

Coachmen Catalina Summit Series 7 134RDX: Best budget pick
You get a 54" × 74" bed up front, a rear corner bathroom with a 24" × 32" shower, a dinette, and a 13,500 BTU A/C with a heat pump, which is rare at this price. The 40-gallon fresh tank is large for a 16-foot camper.
Watch for: The bed is a 54" full-size width, short for tall people. The GVWR is above 3,500 lbs, so it can exceed small SUVs' limits when loaded.

Airstream Bambi 16RB: Best premium small camper
This is the smallest Airstream with a full bathroom. The aluminum shell holds its value for decades, and it has a heat pump on the A/C. If you want a camper you'll keep 20 years or sell for most of what you paid, this is it.
Watch for: Its cargo capacity is only 350 lbs: dry weight 3,150, GVWR 3,500. Water, propane and gear can max it out quickly. The tongue weight is near the limit of many 3,500 lb vehicles.

Modern Buggy Little Buggy 12LRK: Lightest with a kitchen
At about 1,575 lbs dry it's half the weight of everything else here. It has an indoor bed, a rear kitchen and a fireplace. It's for people who want a dry, comfortable bed and a camp kitchen without a big tow.
Watch for: The interior is about 4 feet tall, so you sit, not stand. There's no bathroom, and the fresh tank holds 11 gallons.

Picks other lists get wrong
Airstream Basecamp 16 and 16X
This is the #1 pick on many SUV lists: 16 feet with a 3,500 lb GVWR. Airstream's current Basecamp lineup is only the 20X and Xe, both 20 feet with GVWRs of 4,300–4,500 lbs. That puts them out of range for 3,500 lb vehicles. The 16 and 16X are now used or leftover buys, with used 16Xs from about $28,900.
Winnebago Micro Minnie 1808FBS
This was a long-running SUV-friendly pick, but it was last built for 2025. The 2027 Micro Minnies on dealer lots are larger 2000- to 2200-series floorplans. Used 1808FBSs start around $14,900.
"SUV" trailers with 7,000+ lb GVWRs
One widely read list includes the Bigfoot 2500 B21 (7,500 lb GVWR) and Heartland Sundance 211MB (7,450 lb GVWR). Those need a full-size truck or a large body-on-frame SUV, not a midsize SUV.
What SUVs can tow
| Small crossovers | Often 1,500–2,000 lbs. Teardrops and the lightest micro campers only. |
| 3,500 lb class | Subaru Outback, Tesla Model Y, Kia Carnival and similar. Campers up to about 3,500 lbs GVWR. |
| 5,000 lb class | Most three-row midsize SUVs. Campers up to about 4,000–4,500 lbs GVWR. |
| Large body-on-frame SUVs | Often 7,000–9,000 lbs. Many half-ton-class travel trailers. |
Fiberglass "egg" campers
Scamp, Casita, Escape and Oliver build molded fiberglass trailers that are light, leak-resistant and long-lived. Scamp 13s and Casita 17s weigh roughly 1,500–2,500 lbs dry and are favorites with SUV owners.,They're sold factory-direct rather than through dealers, so they rarely show up in dealer inventory like ours, and wait times can run months. Used ones sell fast and hold their value.
FAQ
What is the best camper to tow with an SUV?
For SUVs rated to tow 5,000 lbs, the Forest River R-Pod RP-171 (4,029 lb GVWR) with a queen, bathroom and 30-gallon tanks. For a 3,500 lb tow rating, the Jayco Jay Feather Air SL 15TBSL, whose GVWR is exactly 3,500 lbs.
Can an SUV tow a camper with a bathroom?
Yes. Several campers with a toilet and shower have GVWRs between 3,500 and 4,500 lbs, including the Jay Feather Air SL 15TBSL, Coachmen Catalina Summit 7 134RDX, R-Pod RP-171 and Airstream Bambi 16RB.
What size camper can a 5,000 lb towing SUV pull?
Aim for a GVWR of about 4,000 lbs or less, which leaves a margin of about 20%. Also check the tongue-weight limit, often 500 lbs, and remember that passengers and gear count against payload.
Is the Airstream Basecamp 16 still made?
No. Airstream's current Basecamp lineup is the 20X and the all-electric Xe, both 20 feet long with GVWRs of 4,300–4,500 lbs. The 16 and 16X are available used or as leftover new units.
Can a Subaru Outback tow a camper?
Outbacks are typically rated for 3,500 lbs, so look for a camper with a GVWR at or under 3,500 lbs, like the Jayco Jay Feather Air SL 15TBSL or a teardrop. Check your specific model year's rating and tongue limit.
How we researched this
We started from every 2027 travel trailer in the ACamper catalog under 3,500 lbs dry, plus the models on the top-ranking SUV-towable lists (Camping World, RVBlogger, Bish's RV).
We ranked them by GVWR and hitch weight, not dry weight, and confirmed each layout on its 2027 manufacturer drawing.
We checked Airstream's and Winnebago's current lineups, which is how we found the Basecamp 16 and Micro Minnie 1808FBS changes.
Prices and counts come from ACamper's crawl of dealer inventory through Oct 14, 2026.
